Established in 2005, with a story that carries back to 1976....
Event creator and coordinator, Sybil Kuhn, had an idea to host an event
to raise awareness and funds for SMA after she had watched a toddler for a
few years. During that time, the toddler was diagnosed with this disorder.
Seeing first-hand how a disorder she had never heard of affected this
toddler, Sybil knew she had to do something to assist this family and thousands of other families affected with this life altering disease.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe.
It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.
SMA affects approximiately 1 in 11,000 births, and about 1 in every 50 Americans is a genetic carrier. SMA can affect any race or gender.
There are four primary types of SMA- 1,2,3, and 4- based on the age that symptoms begin, and highest physical milestone achieved.
This event, held annually, is a way for communities, families and
friends to come together, celebrating the Season, and to be a part of a
great cause! Wreaths of Hope is a one-day event where attendees will find
fresh, pre-made wreaths on hand to purchase -or- attendees are
encouraged to build their own wreath!
With all proceeds directly sent to finding a cure for SMA.
Wreaths of Hope is another way to educate the public on this rare disease.
Having information on hand, at this event, to learn more about SMA.
